A comprehensive curriculum and teaching materials developed in-house
Our curriculum covers all levels of language ability, from that of the complete beginner to that of the student conducting post-doctoral research. Language texts are written especially with the non-native learner Chinese in mind, and are frequently updated. At all levels of instruction a comprehensive approach is stressed in the teaching of the four essential language skills - Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
Student-Focused Methodology
Being strict, professional, goal-oriented, and people-focused are the four fundamental features of TLI’s unique teaching methodology. For decades, TLI has been committed to a student-centered learning approach whereby each learner’s goals, challenges, and needs are evaluated and addressed. Students participate actively in class, working together with the instructor to shape their own learning results. TLI provides students with tailored individual classes (i.e., one-to-one), small group classes, classes on site, or programs for specific purposes (i.e., immersion, study tours).

Class sizes are small to ensure maximum participation.
Students are grouped with other students of similar levels and interests.
Students study with at least 3 different teachers to expose them to a variety of accents and perspectives.
From intermediate level and above, students can direct their learning by selecting from a variety of textbooks and types of classes.

Excellent Professional Teaching Staff
Experienced educators are the core of any successful school. Hence, TLI team possess the professionalism and extensive experience in teaching Chinese as a second language. All TLI’s instructors have attended extensive training prior to facing any foreign student in the classroom. Great importance is placed on educational background as well as participation in various in-service training and regular teaching seminars. In addition, TLI teachers have always demonstrated great warmth and concern with regards to the well-being of their students.
Staff In-Service Training
TLI has signed letters of intent with foreign educational facilities to encourage the exchange of teachers. Over the years, many colleges and universities have offered scholarships and financial aid to hundreds of TLI teachers pursuing Masters or Doctoral degrees. Subsequently, some of these teachers have presided over the teaching in Chinese departments in renowned oversea universities, colleges, and Chinese language schools, including Stanford University, Yale University, Brown University, Cornell University, Princeton University, University of Chicago, Washington University, University of Toronto, University of Hawaii, Wesleyan College, University of California- Berkeley, the Defense Language Institute, the Foreign Service Institute, Nanyang University of Singapore, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
In 1980, Dr. Ho, the founder of TLI paid a visit to the city of Storm Lake in the state of Iowa to assist Buena Vista University establishing its Chinese department. Since then, TLI has raised scholarships for 12 promising students to study at TLI, and every year TLI has sent an outstanding teacher as a visiting lecturer. This tradition has been in practice for over 26 years.
Progress with Time
TLI‘s main goal in the new E-era is to use internet as the platform for online remote education. In Oct. 2007, TLI-China was founded and pioneered the online, real-person, real-time Chinese education program. To keep up with this ever-changing and demanding new world, multimedia, network, and virtual real-teaching environment technology have been brought into the project. We will continue developing and enriching our e-learning model to make TLI-China Online learning truly applicable to students from every corner of this planet.
