   Teaching materials, teachers, and teaching methods are the soul of a school. Over the past decades, Taipei Language Institute has actively participated in a variety of research activities and exerted great effort to develop its own instructional textbooks. TLI can now boast outstanding achievements in Chinese academic research and exchange across the world, as a result of developing and publishing over 200 pieces of work, including textbooks, reference books and dictionaries C on daily life, trade and business, culture, news, religion and other topics C as well as material in the form of cassette tapes and audio CDs.

      In order to satisfy the demands of various prospective trainees, TLI has thus far compiled a wide range of publications in various editions, such as the traditional Chinese edition, simplified characters edition, Pinyin edition, or with Mandarin phonetic symbols (e.g.., bo-po-mo-fo), the pronunciation system employed in Taiwan, and the Yale Pinyin edition. Not only are different language editions available C Chinese, English, Japanese, French and Korean C but so is a range of texts catering to varied levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced), thereby meeting needs based on various backgrounds, nationalities, and professions. TLI also releases its own bilingual periodical, Language Interaction, to supply a forum for its students to exchange ideas and information.

      Particularly striking was the publication of The Modern Chinese Cross-strait Dictionary in 2006, jointly compiled by TLI and Beijing Language and Culture University, and the result of 10 years of painstaking effort by over 60 Chinese scholars.

     In 2001, the TLI Chinese proficiency test corpus developed by the highly experienced teachers of the linguistics advisory committee received wide recognition and became one of the standards for international Chinese proficiency assessment.

    TLI Publishing House will uphold its high standards in the years to come.  Goals include:

*  Making TLI e-bookstore available; editing and publishing TLI textbooks for on-line teaching
*  Launching The Modern Chinese Cross-strait Dictionary globally
*  Revising A Dictionary of Southern Min
 (i.e., TLI's Taiwanese-English dictionary)
Publishing TLI textbooks in various native language editions
Publishing a series of textbooks for trade and business
Continuing to issue the Language Interaction periodical
Re-editing and publication of the book Bible Vocabulary
Publishing a series of multimedia interactive e-textbooks

    TLI will continue to revise and modernize existing textbooks and develop new material to remain abreast of current trends in Chinese.
